The Secretary of the Interior, Mr Harold Ickes, in a speech to the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, sounded a virtual call to arms. “The American people must not tomorrow but now make the supreme choice,” ho said. “We must decide now whether we are willing to buy a craven’s truce or work and sacrifice, fight and die if need be, for liberty in the inspiration of Washington, Lincoln and Churchill. “The Russian-German war does not provide a breathing spell, but needs a greater effort. This is the psychological moment to strike hard and fast. Britain needs all-out aid. We must offer a full measure of the blood, sweat and tears which the heroic. English are yielding at the call of Mr Churchill.” The Navy has asked Congress to approve legislation enabling the retention in service of all enlisted men, regardless of the expiration of dates of enlistment, for a term as long as the nation's interest is imperilled.
