HEAVY EARTHQUAKE

An earthquake described as tremendous was recorded in London at 2 p.m. yesterday. The tremors lasted for nearly four hours. The epicentre is estimated to be 5600 miles away, but the direction could not be determined. A West Bromwich seismologist said the earthquake was the biggest he had recorded since that in China in 1920. The German news agency says there was an earthquake in eastern Morocco yesterday. There was considerable damage, but few casualties. A major earthquake was recorded in Wellington on Thursday night by the seismographs of the Dominion Observatory. The oscillations were very pronounced between midnight and 3 a.m., and continued for some time. The distance of the centre of the earthquake from Wellington is estimated to have been over 6000 miles.
