REGENT THEATRE

“TRIAL OF.MARY DUGAN.” “The Trial of Mary Dugan” will be shown tonight at the Regent Theatre. In the new courtroom melodrama Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer presents the combined talents of two of its young stars —Robert Young and Laraine Day —and a supporting cast of screen favourites. In the title role, Miss Day as the bewildered little secretary who must stand trial for her life, plays the most difficult role of her career. As the inexperienced young lawyer who wins his sweetheart’s acquittal, Young gives another flawless performance. The picture is based on the Bayard Veiller stage success and deals with a girl who escapes from a reformatory and attempts to start life over in the outside world. She succeeds to the extent of winning the confidence of an employer and the love of a young lawyer. But then fate steps in. She becomes the accused in a sensational murder trial, and her past is revealed. The State has an air-tight case

against her. Even her attorney’s attempts to defend her are half-hearted. The featurettes are exceptional and include the latest March of Time, “Labour and Defence,” an absorbing number, the latest Air Mail News of European events, an Our Gang comedy and an exquisite all-colour cartoon. Plans are at the shop of Messrs Steele and Bull and the theatre.
