STATE THEATRE

“ROAD SHOW" The Hal Roach comedy which will be shown tonight, “Road Show,” has nine top-flight actors _ in its cast. They are Adolphe Menjou, Carole Landis, John Hubbard, Patsy Kelly, George E. Stone. Charles Butterworth, Polly Ann Young, Margaret Roach, and James Arthur. “Road Show” introduces to the screen “The Charioteers,” a popular radio team of singers. The hero, Drogo Gaines, is played by John Hubbard, who showed a brilliant flair for comedy in “The Housekeeper’s Daughter” and “Turnabout,” Adolphe Menjou is cast as Colonel Carraway, while Carole Landis plays the role of Penguin Moore, owner of a carnival to which Drogo and the colonel attach themselves on escaping from a sanatorium. Everything goes nicely until the playboy finds himself billed as a lion-tamer, and in this instance the lions do the taming. Perpetually broke, the show ends up on the estate of Carraway’s nephew played by Charles Butterworth whose hobby is playing fire-en-gines and here is staged the best sequence of the picture —a fight between two gangs of rival showmen. It is full of spice and snap, gay with girls and is famous for the new hit tunes — "Yum Yum.” “Calliope Jane,” Slav Annie” and “I Should Have Known You.” The story' is fast and hilarious. The supporting programme is varied and interesting.
