ARMY AND AIR STRENGTH MOUNTING
Nazi Thrusts Stemmed or Slowed Down COUNTER-ATTACKS AT MANY POINTS FIERCE FIGHTING IN PROGRESS IN POLAND (By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, .June 27. Russia, with her Army and Air Force swiftly mounting to full strength after the first surprise, is hitting back and stemming or slowing down. German thrusts on all parts of the huge front. The Russians have counter-attacked at many places after facing onslaughts from what a German military spokesman describes as the most gigantic mass of troops ever flung into battle. The Germans apparently launched four main drives (as described in an earlier message), but are not yet making a direct move against Leningrad from Finland. Some of the fiercest fighting of the whole war is now taking place between the Russian and German demarcation line in Poland in 1939 and the old Russian border, a hundred miles eastward, along the route of the enemy’s second drive. Fighting in the Brody area indicates the strength of the German push in this region, but this apparently has been countered. A break through here would endanger Lwow and later Kiev. Along the Dniester River, the Russians are already well fortified, but should those defences be pierced the attack would threaten to cut off the Russians in the Lwow and Przemysl areas. 1 It is officially announced in Rome that Italy is sending an expeditionary force to Russia.
