SUBSTANTIAL GAINS

British troops west of Damascus have made substantial gains in the face of increased resistance. The area round Merj lyum captured yesterday is being consolidated. In the coastal district British artillery has gone into action, supported by naval units, at a point 15 miles south of Beirut. Reuter’s correspondent reports that Vichy planes today flew over Merj lyum and unloaded bombs over the centre of the town. Fighters of the Australian Air Force shot down three Vichy fighters and damaged others.

Mechin arrived at Ankara last night, with a personal message from Marshal Petain to the President. Ismet Inonu, reiterating Franco-Turkish traditional friendship. It was reported yesterday that M. Mechin, a Vichy Minister without portfolio, was overdue on an air journey from Syria to Ankara. His supposed object was to negotiate the possible internment in Turkey of the Vichy forces, commanded by General Deniz, now opposing the Allies in Syria.
