GIANT TELESCOPE

LARGEST SOUTH OF LINE. The last component of the largest telescope south of the Equator is about to leave England for the Radcliffe Observatory in Pretoria. It is an enormous glass mirror and it was only completed at the fourth attempt. Expert workers took 18 months to do the job. This giant 74-inch reflecting astronomical telescope is a marvel for the perfection of its mechanical components and for the accuracy of its optical parts. The mirror, for example, achieves, in terms of light waves, an accuracy of twenty millionths of an inch. The movable parts of this triumph of British science applied to industry weigh 35 tons.
