MOST AMAZING CHESS PLAYER. It has been said of Paul Morphy that he was the most amazing chess-player the world has ever seen. Paul Charles Morphy was his name. He was born in New Orleans in 1837, the son of lawyer of Spanish extraction, and early in life he showed incredible aptitude as well as marvellous skill in the difficult and scientific game of chess. He defeated the leading chess players of New Orleans before he was twelve. At 13, without any practice except that he enjoyed within the family circle, he played two games with Lowenthal, then considered one of the best players in the world, and Avon one game and drew the other. In Europe he defeated all the great chess-experts one after the other, including the German champion, Adolf Andersen by 8 games to 3. In 1864 he went back to the United States, but his amazing brain gave way, and he died in his native town in 1884.
