NURSES CALLED UP
PAYMENT OF OUTFIT GRANTS. EXPLANATION OF POSITION. The position regarding the payment of State outfit grants to nurses called up for service is set out in a communication from the Minister of Defence. Mr Jones, received by Mi’ J. Robertson, member for Masterton. In response to complaints about an alleged delay in the payment of the grant, Mr Robertson made inquiries in official circles. The reply of the Minister states: “The nurses, if holding the necessary qualifications, apply for a position in the forces through the Director of Nursing Services, Department of Health. The applications are referred for careful consideration by the Nursing Council. When selected, nurses arc medically boarded and if passed fit for service are called up as required. When the original notification preparatory to being called up is forwarded to.nurses, they are advised not to leave their present occupations as it may be two or three months before their services are required. When it is finally decided that a nurse is to be appointed she is so informed and immediate steps are taken to arrange payment of her outfit grant in order that she may be in a position to finance the purchase of the uniform and clothing necessary.”
