FEATHERSTON
LEAGUE OF MOTHERS MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in the Parish Hall when Mrs Arch. Clark presided over a good attendance. Mrs Clark introduced the speaker, Mrs Campbell Pearce, who gave an interesting address on conditions and life in Canada gained from her sister, who is the wife of Wing Commander Isitt, of Toronto. Mars W. Barton read a very interesting* letter recently received from a 'friend in England, which spoke of the courage, determination and calmness of the women in the war. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded Mesdames Pearce and Barton. The hostesses were Mesdames T. Hardie, Kilsby and Fellingham.
WEEKEND BURGLARY ■ SMALL SUM OF MONEY TAKEN. The business premises of Messrs Hill and Hughes were broken into at the weekend, the till in the office having been winched off and taken away. The person or persons responsible for the burglary gained admission through the door of the • premises used by Messrs J. B. McEwan and thence into the garage, where a panel in the door leading to the office was broken and the bolt removed. There w;is, it is understood, a small sum of money in the till. Euchre Party. An enjoyable euchre party was held yesterday afternoon in the Red Cross Society's romss. The winner was Miss Esma Card. Competitions were won by Mrs Sim and Miss Card. Personal Items. Miss Betty Smith has been notified to hold herself in readiness to report for V.A.D. duty at the Emergency Clearing Hospital. Three other V.A.D.’s have qualified for duty. Lieuf.-Colonel S. Varnham. who was wounded in the Grecian campaign, is now out of hospital. Mr and Mrs F. S. Hayes have received word that their son, Private R. F. Hayes, • machine-gun section, is missing. .Word has been received by Mr and 'fibs C. J. Nix that their son, Sapper N. (“Bunty") Nix. Army Group Company; is posted as missing. Golf. The following were the best cards handed in for the second round of the eclectic competition, held on Saturday:—H. Neilson, 38-8-30; A. McNamara, 43-12-31; J. McCallum, 37-5-32: L. Benton. 40-8-32. The annual match with Tui Glen, played over the weekend resulted in a win for Featherston by 17 games to 16. Carterton Gasworks. Most of the material for the setting of the new retorts at the Carterton Municipal Gasworks has arrived. It is expected that the work of dismantling the old retorts and erecting the new ones will be put in hand very shortly.
