DEARER NEWSPAPERS

INCREASED COST OF PRODUCTION An increase in the price of “The Times'' from 2d to 3d was announced hist month. This action has been taken on account of the increase in cost of production caused by the war —for the same reasons, the price was raised to 3d in March. 1918. "The service rendered to the reader by the advertiser in his claims on space is not always understood," says the “Times" announcement. “The difference between the cost of each copy of a newspaper and the net price received by the publishers must necessarily be met by the revenue from advertisements. The freedom of the British Press has been established by its power to attract, first, a strong body of readers and. as a consequence, an independent revenue from advertisers. By this means it freed itself in the past from dependence on subsidies and enabled itself vastly to increase its value to the reader. Moreover most advertisements provide an essential link between the public and the commercial and manufacturing activities of the country. The news they supply itself constitutes a public service."
