BASKETBALL

NOTES ON SATURDAY’S PLAY lONA SHOW IMPROVEMENT. KEENLY CONTESTED GAMES. (Contributed.) lona showed marked improvement in their match against College. Their positional play was better, particularly in the centre, J. Bannister and M. Hourigan showing promise. In. the goal C. Talbot played her usual good game. College had to work hard for their win. They owed much to their defence, and to D. Heckler especially, for saving many goals. The centre third attacked well, but their defence is still weak. Joan Gemmell, for Collegians, played her best game to date. Her shooting was, on the whole, good, but the wind made accurate aiming difficult. For the Stars I. E. Jones played consistently well, scoring most of the goals for her team. J. Palmer is also worthy of mention. The match was keenly contested right up till the last. Collegians yT. showed better form on Saturday by defeating Greytown. The goal third has been greatly strengthened by the inclusion of T. Hemi. She caught and shot well, and gives promise of developing into a splendid A grade player. Collegians would be a good team if coached regularly. Greytown, as always, played steadily and put up a splendid fight. They are verykeen and try to improve. The Masterton Hospital team is fortunate in having D. Mahoney and C. Moylan in their team. Their centre and goal thirds are as strong as any in the association. Therefore their scores are high. Carterton played well, their goal third shooting consistently well. Both these teams should rank high at the end of the season.

Although the score between Stars 11. and Belvedere was low. the game was interesting to watch. The B grade is on the improvement all the time, and this is encouraging.
