SAVING THE WORLD
TASK FOR GREAT BRITAIN & UNITED STATES SPEECH BY MR CHURCHILL. ON RECEIVING AMERICAN DEGREE. LONDON, June 16. The honorary degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred on Mr Winston Churchill this afternoon by the President of Rochester University, New York State. The degree was presented and accepted by trans-Atlan-tic short-wave radio. Mr Churchill marked the occasion by making a ten-minute speech, broadcast in the United States, in which he referred to Anglo-American unity. He said a wonderful story was unfolding before their eyes. How it would end they did not yet know. The future of human society would be shaped by the resolve they took and the deeds they did. Whatever happened, Britain would endure to the end. Speaking of the explanation of the enslavement of Europe by the Nazi regime, Mr Churchill said one by one the countries of Europe had been struck doxvn, whereas one united gesture xvould have warded off for mankind a fearful enslavement. But there was no unity. Time was short. Every month added to the length and to the perils of the journey that had to be made. "United we stand,” said Mr Churchill, “divided we fall. Divided the dark ages return; united we can save and guide the world.”
