EKETAHUNA

BOROUGH COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At a special meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council there were present the Mayor, Mr W. Olsen. Crs P. S. Page, K. D. Marenzi. E. M. Simmers, D. D. Ryan, M. W. Priest and R. Gallagher. The meeting was held for the purpose of considering the estimates and the striking of the rates for the year 1941-42. The Clerk, Mr B. Dinnan, gave a brief resume of the borough’s position covering the period from March 31, 1931, to March 31. 1941, and the following information was disclosed: —The public debt at March 31. 1931. was £31,708 Ils 8d and at March 31. 1941, it was £17,813 I.ls 3d. The interest and principal repayments on loans amount to £1630 6s 4d per annum. The public debt is being reduced at the rate of approximately £lOOO per annum. The rates as at March 31, 1931. were: Separate rates of 7 5-12 d in the £. special rating area 2/3 13-lGd in the £. The rates as at March 31, 1941, were: Amalgamated rate of Is 7d in the £. In September. 1946, Conversion Loan No. 1. amounting to £3.500. will mature, and will be re-i paid in full. The annual payments of] interest and repayments of principal on this loan amount to £376. In December.' 1949, Water Supply Loan No. 4, amounting to £9,000, will mature, and will be repaid in full. The annual payments of interest and repayments of principal on this loan amount to £463. The following rates were struck (last year’s figures being shown in parentheses):—General rate, 5d (sid); hospital and charitable aid, ltd Hid); sanitation, Id (Id); street lighting, Ijd (2d); loans, conversion No. 1,2 3-8 d (2jd); conversion No. 2, 3ijd (3 7-8 d); water No. 4, 3 l-8d (25-8 d water maintenance rate of 1 per cent. The total amalgamated rate of l/6Jd in the £ on the unimproved value and a water rate of 1 per cent (1/7 in the £ and water rate 1 per cent.) BOBBY CALF POOL ANNUAL MEETING. Mr C. Connor presided over a moderate attendance at the annual meeting of the Eketahuna Bobby Calf Pool held in the Odd Fellows' Hall on Friday. Among those present were Messrs Lloyd Hammond, E. W. Harrison and J. Hodgson, executive members of the Manawatu Bobby Calf Poo] Federation. After several speakers had congratulated the committee on the excellent results of the first year of the pool, the report and balance-sheet was adopted. The balance-sheet disclosed that the sum of £l4 8s Id was available for carrying forward. The election of the committee resulted as follows:—Messrs E. McAnulty, G. A. Hanson, Cooper, C. Connor, A. E. Harrington. J. Monaghan. A. Campbell, J. Evans and R. Mabey.

The meeting was then addressed by Messrs Harrison, Hammond and Hodgson on the activities of the Manawatu Federation. The speakers invited the Eketahuna Pool to join the Federation.

S.M. COURT SPECIAL SITTING. A special sitting of the Eketahuna S.M. Court was held on Friday, when Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.. presided. Donald John Falkner, on four charges of having purchased various amounts of fuel oil of a kind not. authorised by the Oil Fuel Emergency Regulations, pleaded guilty on all four charges. Constable Turvey stated the defendant had operated on another person’s licence, this being a breach of the regulations. Defendant was fined £2 on each of the four charges, with costs £2 2s. The Social Security Department proceeded against Malcolm Barry Page for having failed to make quarterly payments. There were five charges. Defendant was fined 10s on each charge, with costs £2 12s. In a civil action H. J. Brookes, Newman, claimed from J. W. Harding the sum of £l5, being the cost of one cow and damage to another which Harding collided with while travelling on the main highway at Newman some months ago. Defendant counter-claimed for the sum of £ll for damage to his car. Mr P. S. Page appeared for plaintiff and Mr C. H. Parsons for defendant. The case for the plaintiff was that Harding had failed to keep a sufficient look-out, and this the defence denied. After considerable evidence had been heard the Magistrate held that he was satisfied that Harding did not keep a sufficient look-out or he would have seen the cows before he did and avoided the collision; and further, a person with land adjoining a highway is under no obligation to a user of the highway to keep his stock off the highway. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £l5. with court costs, solicitors' and witnesses' expenses £6. Judgment was also entered for plaintiff on the counter-claim. Plunket Society. At the monthly meeting of the Plunket Society, Mrs Albrechtsen presided. Accounts amounting to £2 7s 9d were passed for payment. The committee gratefully acknowledges the following subscriptions and donations:—lVlcsdames J. C. Percy and D. Ryan. 10s each: Mesdames A. H. Gray. S. Daniel, N. Williams. I. Barton and J. B. O'Niel. 5s each; Mrs Hodgson. 3s.

A sharp earthquake was experienced in Eketahuna al 0.45 o’clock on Saturday evening. It was preceded by a loud rumbling noise.
