RUGBY FOOTBALL

WAIRARAPA UNION INTER-CLUB COMPETITIONS. FEATHERSTON BEAT GREYTOWN. The second round of the Wairarapa Rugby. Union’s senior competition was commenced in fine but cold weather on Saturday. An interesting feature was the first defeat this season of Greytown at the hands of Featherston. Carterton remains the only unbeaten team. Indications point to Featherston and Carterton contesting final championship honours. The standard of play, in the majority of matches, was good.

RESULTS AT A GLANCE

Senior. Carterton 25, Red Star 0. Featherston 8. Greytown 3. Gladstone 25, Masterton 5. Third Grade A. Masterton 14, Old Boys 11. College 20, Carterton 6. Carterton 9, Dalefield 0. Fourths. College beat Martinborough by default.

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP CARTERTON v RED STAR. EASY WIN FOR THE MAROONS. Carterton scored a clear-cut win over Red Star, by 25 points to nil. in an uninspiring game at Memorial Park. There was a fair attendance of spectators. A cold westerly wind made conditions unpleasant. From the commencement of play Carterton had the Stars penned up and throughout the game dominated play. Red Star failed to function as a team. The back line received few opportunities and the forwards lacked sufficient weight to stem the Carterton onrush. The Carterton back line was without the services of F. Fitzgerald, but with the excellent play of G. Udy. who filled the breach, it functioned efficiently. G. Brown, who played his last game for Carterton, was in brilliant form. By his efforts many bright back movements went under way. Brown, who entered the Air Force training camp at Levin yesterday, will be a severe loss to Carterton’s back line. He was well supported by his brother, J. A. Brown. It is understood that his services will also be lost to his club in the near future. The most prominent players in the Red Star team were R. Howard in the forwards and R. O’Kane in the backs. Howard was always in the thick of play and ably lead his team. W. Peterson ,who played his second game this season, was starved for the ball on the wing. O'Kane- played a good all-round game. For Carterton tries were scored by G. Udy (2), H. Matheson (1) and McPhee (2). J. A. Brown scored a try, converted two tries and kicked a penalty goal. Mr B. M. Hurley controlled the game.

FEATHERSTON v GREYTOWN. ANOTHER WIN FOR LOCAL TEAM. Featherston consolidated its position on the championship table by beating Greytown 8-3 at Featherston. Play was clean, hard and fast and the spectators were treated to an excellent exhibition .of the code. Featherston is showing more finish with every match and should fully extend Carterton for championship honours. For Featherston Janson scored a try which was converted by Mahupuka. Greytown's points camo from a-pen-ally goal kicked by P t . Brunton. GLADSTONE BEAT MASTERTON. A HARD CONTEST. Gladstone beat Masterton by 25 points to 5 in a hard game at Gladstone. Masterton put up a game fight but the local team always had the upper hand. For Gladstone tries were scored by Compton (3) and Colquhoun. Reiri scored a try, converted two tries and kicked a penalty. L. Foreman kicked a penalty. Gladstone’s back line was superior to that of Masterton, but the forwards were more evenly matched.
