BRITISH DEFENCES

AGAINST AIR & SEA ATTACK MR ERNEST BEVIN’S SURVEY. MANY U-BOATS DESTROYED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. June 14. The Minister of Labour, Mr Ernest Bovin, stated today that Britain had made night bombing expensive for the enemy over this country. Scientists, engineers, skilled aircraftmen and aircraftwomen were building armour for night defence, and the day was not Jar distant when the people of Britain would be as safe at night as they now were in the daytime. Mr Bevin also spoke of the Battle of the Atlantic. He declared that the Royal Navy had destroyed dozens of submarines that had suddenly come out. The progress of the air defence measures in Britain is indicated by the announcement that several thousand volunteers are required immediately for the defence of new R.A.F. stations aerodromes, and establishments which are now being brought into use in all parts of the country. Their duties will be garrison defence of aerodromes or establishments, involving training for active military operations. The men will be trained in the use of a variety of weapons. “The Times” says the number of planes Germany has moved to other theatres of war and to the Russian frontier is reflected in the scale of the raids against Britain. There have recently been many nights on which large-scale raids against. Britain would have been possible, but many planes normally stationed in France have been sent to Greek, Yugoslav and Rumanian bases.
