ON ENEMY SHIPPING IN MEDITERRANEAN AT SEA AND IN HARBOUR. ACHIEVEMENTS OF BRITISH SUBMARINES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 14. An Admiralty communique states: “Further successful attacks have been reported by our submarines operating against the enemy’s sea communications in the Mediterranean. The attacks have not only been carried out at sea but our submarines have sought out the enemy and destroyed him in his harbours. “An Italian armed trawler escorting two schooners was sighted by one of our submarines. The enemy convoy was chased and all three vessels were gunk by gunfire. Another submarine torpedoed and almost certainly sank a large tanker of about 8000 tons. The Italian tanker Strombo (5232 tons) is reported to have reached Istanbul after having been seriously damaged by a torpedo from one of our submarines. “In the Central Mediterranean the harbour of the Italian island of Lampedusa has been attacked by a submarine and a fully laden ship of about 1000 tons lying in the harbour was sunk by a torpedo. “Another submarine investigated the harbour of Benghazi. An Italian armed merchant cruiser lying in the harbour was torpedoed. “In the Aegean a harbour of the en-emy-occupied island of Mitylene was attacked by a submarine. Two schooners and a large supply lighter were sunk in the harbour.”
