FEATHERSTON
BOROUGH COUNCIL BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The first meeting of the new Featherston Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday. The Mayor (Mr J. W. Card ) was sworn in by the Town Clerk. The councillors were sworn in by the Mayor as follows: —S. P. Batchelor, W. J. Boston, H. W. Cundy, B. B. Donald. T. G. Hardie, R. R. P Hardy, G. A. Farrier, C. C. Kenward and C. R. Skipage. Councillor H. W. Cundy was elected Deputy-Mayor. The following committees were appointed:—Works Committee: Councillors Donald, Farrier and Skipage. Water and Drainage: Councillors, Farrier. R. R. P. Hardy and Boston. Reserves: Councillors H. W. Cundy, T. Hardie and Batchelor. Buildings and Baths: Councillors Boston, Kenward and Cundy. The treasurer reported:— Receipts since the last meeting, £275 17s 3d. Bank balances: District Fund A/c. cr., £762 6s 6d; Cemetery A/c. cr., £65 13s •Id; Domain A/c. cr., £3l 2s; Mayor's Relief Fund A/c. cr., £BO 14s 9d; Water Supply Loan, 1936 A/c. cr., £173 15s lOd; Library A/c. cr., £79 14k lOd. The Cosy Theatre manager wrote asking permission to erect a poster board at the corner of Lyons and Fitzherbert streets. The request was refused.
The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote supplying a copy of its estimates for the current year and showing the instalments due by the Featherston Council to be £57 10s per quarter. Mrs E. Bidwill wrote asking that the Oouncil supply a depot for the deposit and sorting of old material for cleaning aeroplanes. The use of a room in the Town Hall was granted. A deputation from the local Home Guard consisting of Messrs F. Hayes and A. White waited on the Council and after hearing them it was resolved to release members mentioned and thus enable them to join the Home Guard. The Featherston Miniature Rifle Club wrote asking for the use of the gymnasium in which to hold their shooting competition on the Wednesday of each week. The request was granted on the usual terms. The Lake County Council wrote asking support for a resolution requesting the Government to abolish the 40hour week during war time. The letter was received. The chairman of the Licensing Committee forwarded notices authorising the issuing of hotel licenses to Messrs E. A. Sim and Edward' Perry. The Waiarapa Electric Power Board wrote in regard to conserving the use of power, the Council agreeing to the suggestions. The New Zealand Crippled Children Society wrote applying for a donation towards its funds. The request was refused. The Ranger reported having dealt with 15 head of cattle. It was resolved to accept the tender of L. G. Rasmussen for the delivery of metal. The estimates as supplied by the Clerk for the current year were adopted. United Service. In the Anzac Hall tomorrow night, commencing at 7 o'clock, a united service will be held by the local churches in which the Anglican Presbyterian and Methodist choirs will participate. The Rev. J. R. Higgs will speak on the subject, “Can we win the War?" The Revs. R. S. Keenan and L. A. Hayman will conduct the service, and the Home Guard will attend. Odd Fellows’ Lodge. The monthly meeting of Loyal Unity Lodge, M.U.L0.0.F., was held during the week, Bro. F. Casidy presiding over a fair attendance. Visitors to the lodge were the District Grand Master and District officers, and representatives of the Upper Hutt and Trentham lodges. Interesting addresses were given by the visitors on matters in connection with the Order. Women’s Division. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was' held in the Red Cross Society’s rooms yesterday. Mrs Wakeley presided over a good attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Aitken and Miss Viles. Members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy with Mrs Polson. It was decided to hold meetings every three months, the next meeting to take place in August. The hostesses were Mesdames Wakeley, Sharp and Feast. Personal. Mr lan Feast and Mr J. Burt arc spending a holiday in Auckland.
