STORAGE OF CARROTS
TRIED METHODS. Maincrop carrots are best lifted and stored for the winter, particularly when they are grown on heavy ground or where slugs are likely to be troublesome. They are lifted by first loosening the soil carefully with a fork, then pulling them out gently. If the weather is sunny they may be laid on the surface of the ground for an hour or two to dry, after which the foliage should be cut off close to the crown and the sound roots separated from those showing disease. Small quantities of carrots can be stored between layers of sand in a box. The best outside method is to stack the roots in a circular heap. The heap is then covered with clean straw or fern; over this is placed a layer of soil three or four inches thick taken from the edge of the heap to form a trench. Beat the soil well down on the sides of the heap to run off the rain and leave a tuft of straw projecting from the top of the heap to allow for ventilation.
