BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEBTINO. ("Times-Arc" Special.) The first meeting of the newlyelected Borough Council was held last evening, there being present the Mayor, Mr W. Olsen. Crs. P. S. Page, E. M. Simmers, D. D. Ryan, M. W. Priest and B. R. Gallagher. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. K. Marenzi. For the position of deputy-Mayor. Cr. E. JVI. Simmers was elected unopposed. The following committees were elected: — Finance: The Mayor. Crs Ryan and Page; Works, the Mayor. Crs. Ryan and Page; Water. Fire and Drainage, Crs. Ryan. Pago and Priest; Cemetery. Baths and Reserves. Crs. Simmers, Marenzi and Gallagher; Library. Crs. Simmers. Marenzi and Gallagher. The Town Clerk (Mr B. Dinnan) reported on the borough’s finances as at May 31 as follows: —District. Fund Account, dr. £93 5s 3d; Domain Account, cr. £6 14s Id; rate arrears. £596 17s lid; Cemetery arrears. £8 10s; Library arrears, 17s 6d. The Wairarapa branch of the Crippled Children’s Society wrote asking for a donation to its funds; It was decided to make a grant of £2 2s. The Lake County Council wrote asking for support of a resolution in connection with the abolition of the 40hour week. —The letter was received. The Wairarapa Hospital Board forwarded a list of levies on local bodies in its district. The borough will pay this year £174, which is a slight reduction on last year. The Fire Brigade wrote asking for its half-yearly grant.-—Agreed to. The local branch of the Labour Party wrote pointing out that the official organ of the Party no longer appeared in the library and asked if the council would consider again placing it in the reading room. In view of the fact that one other political party branch which had asked permission to supply the reading- j room with copies of its official paper, | had been refused, the council was of the opinion that the reading room at present fully catered for the public and that political propaganda was not desirable. Mr A. Ramsay was appointed borough ranger.
