The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall, will arrive at Napier from the East Coast at 4.30 p.m. today, and will leave for Wellington on Saturday morning. Dr. Graham Cowie has left Masterton to go on active service overseas. It has been arranged for a locum tenens to take over his practice in October. Mr W. T. Wood, who was M.P. for Palmerston North 30 years ago and a strong adherent to the old LiberalLabour Party, celebrated his 87th birthday in Bondi, Sydney, yesterday.
The death occurred at Palmerston North Hospital this morning of Mr Waaka Rei Paku, a member of the well-known Paku family of Homewood, at the age of 38 years. The funeral will take place at Homewood on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The appointment of Mr J. H. Boyes, Commissioner of the Social Security, Department, as Acting Public Service Commissioner as from June 10 was announced last night by the ActingPrime Minister, Mr Nash. He said that Mr Boyes had been appointed by the Government, owing to the death of Mr T. Mark, Public Service Commissioner. It was also announced by Mr Nash that Mr H. Digby Smith would assume the office of Acting Commissioner of the Social Security Department.
The funeral of the late Mrs Henry Evans took place in Masterton yesterday. there being a large attendance of mourners. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence, including tributes from the staff and employees of the Wellington Meat Export Co. and thel employees of the Waingawa Freezing Works. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich officiated, conducting services at the chapel and at the graveside. Messrs T. Simpson. J. C. Johnstone (Palmerston North), J. J. Evans (a son. of Wellington). J. Ewington, J. O. Thompson and F. S. Harrington acted as pallbearers. ,
The funeral of the late Mrs Maria Reynolds took place at the Clareville cemetery yesterday afternoon. There was a large and representative attendance from all parts of the Wairarapa, particularly of early settlers. The Rev. John Davie conducted the service at tho residence in Renall Street. Masterton. and also at the graveside. Many beautiful floral emblems, testifying to the respect and esteem in which the deceased lady was held, were laid upon the grave. These included wreaths from Knox Church and the Solway College Board of Governors. The chief mourners were the three sons, Messrs Charles Reynolds (Middleton). Frank Reynolds (Lansdowne), and Walter Reynolds (Papakura). The pall-bear-ers were the five grandsons: Messrs Gordon (East Tartahi), Stanley (Middleton), Keith (Turakina), Noel (Tinuiland Howard Reynolds (Feikling). and a grandson-in-law, Mr Rav Campbell (Mt. Bruce).
