The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, has received the following reply to a message sent by his Excellency to General Freyberg: “May 1 thank your Excellency personally and on behalf of all ranks of the Imperial forces who served in Crete for your inspiring message to us all. I can assure you that you can be justly proud of the men who fought in defence of Crete. “The New Zealand Division fought magnificently, and, though forced at last to withdraw in the face of unprecedented air attacks, they had the satisfaction of knowing that nobody could have done more than they did. The devision is now back in camp resting and refitting. Our losses have been severe, and the deep sympathy of the men of the N.Z.E.F. in Egypt goes out to the people of New Zealand. Youi sympathy and pride in our achievement are an unfailing spur to us, and 'we will do our best in the future as we have in the past in Greece and Crete.”
