AIR FORCE RAIDS

ON RHODES & TARGETS IN AFRICA ITALIAN PLANES SHOT DOWN AT MALTA. FOUR BRITISH MACHINES MISSING. LONDON. June 10. A Middle East Royal Air Force communique reports a heavy raid on the island of Rhodes on Sunday night. Direct hits were made on the’ moles and aerodrome, and a large fire was started which could be seen 60 miles away. Bombs fell among aircraft and fires and explosions followed. At Malta four Italian bombers were intercepted off the island yesterday. Two were shot down, and the other two badly damaged. In Libya, planes of the Fleet Air Arm raided the harbour at Tripoli and elsewhere aircraft on the ground were machine-gunned. In Abyssinia South African planes bombed enemy positions in the small area still occupied by the Italians. Four British planes are missing from all these operations, but the crew of one is safe. LAND OPERATIONS. In south-west Abyssinia all the major positions in front of Jimma have been overcome, and operations are proceeding favourably. At least four Italian divisions have been destroyed or dispersed in the Battle of the Lakes, and a further 45,000 square miles of territory have fallen into our hands. There is some patrol activity in the frontier area of Libya, and the position around Tobruk remains unchanged. CASUALTIES IN ALEXANDRIA. It is officially announced in Cairo that 410 people were killed in raids on Alexandria on Saturday night and 31 injured. In last Wednesday's raid 147 were killed and 92 injured.
