MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE e t COUNCIL MR E. W. CHEETHAM RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN. RATE FOR CURRENT YEAR. ' ("Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. Mr E. W. Cheetham was unanimously re-elected chairman and it was resolved that the whole of {he council be a finance committee and that the meetings of the council be held on the second Monday in every month, as hitherto. Following the annual meeting the monthly meeting of the new council was held. The Chairman, Mr Cheetham, presided, there also being present Councillors A. Forsberg, D. Bennett, A. Gray, J. H. MacDonald, and O. Welch. Prior to the commencement of the business the chairman congratulated the members of the council on their re-election. A special order regarding the raising of a loan of £2,100 for the purpose of the reconstruction of Brookes Bridge was confirmed. In pursuance of notice already published a’ general rate of Igd in the pound over the whole county was struck for the current year, this being the same rate as last year. It was decided that a discount of 5 per cent be allowed on all general rates paid by August 15, 1941. The chairman reported that as authorised at the lapt meeting he had made proposals for the current year regarding main highway estimates and instructed the clerk to forward same for consideration by the government authorities. Copies of the proposals were submitted and the action of the chairman confirmed. Public Works estimates covering subsidies for the erection of Brookes Bridge and to meet the cost of repair- : ing flood damage caused by the recent : floods were submitted to the council, .and the chairman’s action in having these forwarded to the Public Works Department confirmed. A recommendation of the outgoing council regarding the tenancy of a reserve was also confirmed. An application for the tenancy of a further reserve was approved subject to certain conditions. The chairman was appointed to represent the council on the District < Highways Council. ; With reference to the Bridge Loan of £2.100 the clerk submitted draft debentures. which were approved. A letter was received from the N.Z. Crippled Children Society regarding a donation. This letter was received. The clerk reported that he had issued a building permit after approval had been received from the Inspector of Health. The clerk’s action was confirmed. I The clerk reported on the action he had taken in regard to outstanding rates. t The overseer. Mr C. Seymour, re- J ported that the work of clearing then roads after the damage caused by their recent floods was progressing satisfac- s torily and prospective work was dis- i cussed. s
The council agreed to support a resolution passed by the Lake County Council for submission to the Minister of Labour urging the immediate cessation of the forty-hour week and the temporary waiving of the ideals, rights and privileges of both employer and employee.
