The Governor-General and Lady Newall left Auckland yesterday to pay .then - first official call to Gisborne and Napier. They will arrive at Wellington on Saturday. Miss Jane Hall, of Cyclax, of London, Ltd., is on a visit to Masterton. Mr S. G. Holland, M.P., Leader of the Opposition, arrived in Wellington this morning from the South Island. Mrs J. Jenkin, Cornwall Street, Masterton, has received cable advice that her son, Lance Corporal J. Jenkin, has returned safely to Egypt from Crete.
Mrs A. Maguire, of Tararua Street, Masterton, has received a cable stating that her sons, Sapper L. Maguire and Private W. Cragg, of Masterton, have, arrived safely in Egypt from Crete.
Mr W. J. Cartwright, well-known Canterbury teacher, has been elected to represent South Island teachers on the Superannuation Board. The vacancy arose from the resignation of Mr J. G. Polson. Mr and Mrs A. E. Clemas, of Masterton, received a cablegram this morning from their son, Private Cliff Clemas, of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas, stating: "Survived second evacuation, Safe and well.” Mr lan Coleman, of Masterton, has left to reside in Greytown, where he has purchased a business. Mr Coleman was well known in sporting circles; in Masterton, and had been a member ; of the Red Star senior cricket team which won the Wairarapa championship in 1939-40 and 1940-41. Mr R. A. Wright, former M.P. for the old Wellington Suburbs constituency, intends to be a candidate for the Wellington West seat in the event of.the general election being held this year. The electorate is at present represented in the House of Representatives by Mrs Stewart. An outstanding New Zealand scientist, believed to be the oldest member of the New Zealand Royal Society, Mr J. A. Pond, died on Sunday night, aged 95, says an Auckland Press Association message. He was president of the museum 50 years ago and was Government Analyst from 1882 to 1911. He arrived at Auckland from London in 1865 and practised as a pharmacist.
Sergeant Pilot C. Armitage, a son of Mr and Mrs W. Armitage, of Mataura. and formerly of Masterton. was entertained recently by Mataura residents. Sergeant Pilot Armitage, who was born at Petone, received his education in Masterton. where he attended the Lansdowne School and the Masterton Technical School. He joined the air force in October last year and received his training at Levin, Taieri and Woodburn. Warm tributes were paid to the sterling qualities of tlie guest of the evening and the presentation of a monetary gift was made on behalf of the assembly. Pilot Sergeant Armitage was also entertained by the Mataura Soccer Club and a suitable, presentation made by club members. Today is the thirty-fifth anniversary of the death of the great Liberal leader in Now Zealand politics. Mr Richard John Seddon. Mr Seddon was a member of Parliament for 27 years, and Premier for 13 years. During his term of office he instituted many social reforms that have become a part of the national life of the Dominion. Mr Seddon entered Parliament on September 24, 1879. as member for Hokitika, in the Seventh Parliament. He represented that district as the) Kumara electorate in the eighth, ninth! and tenth Parliaments, and as Westland from the eleventh to the sixteenth Parliament. He became a Minister of the Crown under the Ballance Administration in 1891. and formed his own Ministry in 1893. being Premier from May 1. 1893. till his death on June 10. 1906.
