FLOOD DAMAGE ESTIMATED COST TO COUNTY. ("Times-Age” Special.) The county engineer, Mr W. C. Duffill, submitted to the monthly meeting of the council the following schedule of the estimated cost of restoring roads and bridges damaged in the recent flood:—Flat Bush £3BO. Haunui £2O, Utewai £25, Waihoki £235, Puketoi £250, Rakanui £4O, Saunders Road £320, Wright’s Road £7O, Castle Hill Road £540, Nga Rata £2O, Wingate’s Road £1325, Pori £990. Savage’s Road £2O, Leache’s Road £5O. No. 816 Mas-terton-Weber Main Highway £2OOO. Eketahuna-Alfredton £250, Pah Valley Highway £250, Mangaone Valley £250. Application was made to the Highways Board for a subsidy on the cost of restoring o*ir highways and from intimation to hand no difficulty will be experienced in obtaining a subsidy for the work at standard rates.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Women’s Institute Mrs D. Fraser presided over a good attendance of members. Two letters were read from soldiers at Suva who gratefully acknowledged the receipt of parcels forwarded by the institute. It was announced that a team would produce a play at the Drama Festival to be held in the Eketahuna Public Hall on July 29. The potato competition, the proceeds of which will go to the Federation funds, was won by Mrs Fraser with Mrs P. Oliver second. Mrs Fraser presented the trophies for the previous year’s competitions as follows: Flowers, Mrs Baucke 1, Mrs Albrechtsen 2; handwork, Mrs Fraser 1. Mrs Baucke 2. ’ The roll call. “Sick room hints,” brought forward some very helpful suggestions. A demonstration of smocking was given by Mrs McAlister. The month’s competitions resulted as follows:—Arrowheads. Mrs Fraser 1. Miss R. Mitchell 2, Miss F. Schqrmann 3; mittens, Miss M. Hooper 1, Miss Mitchell 2, Mrs Fraser 3. Afternoon tea was served. A Patriotic Effort. A most enjoyable time was spent by the large number of patrons at a flag “500” evening held by the Eketahuna Women’s War Committee. The prize winners were: Ladies, Mesdames D. Fraser and Mcßride; men. Messrs W. Olsen and Mcßride. Personal Items. Mrs W. Simpson, Opunakc. is the guest of her mother. Mrs D. Fraser. Hastwell Street. Mrs Dowsett, Levin, has been visiting her brothel - , Mr A. Frederickson. Anderson Street. Miss Margaret Brittain, Newman, has returned home after having been the guest of Miss Peggy Falla ver. Wellington.
