AMERICAN SHIPS

ONLOOKERS DURING ACTION AGAINST BISMARCK. SOME ANGRY ASSERTIONS BY NAZIS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. June 7. The Berlin newspaper “Voelkischer Boebachter” says that three American ships of the Atlantic patrol were present during the action against the Bismarck. They were so close to the scene that one of them, the Modoc, was nearly hit by shells from the Bismarck.

Ostensibly the American ships approached to pick up survivors, but, says the paper, President Roosevelt is racking his brains trying to make believe that America has to defend herself against Germany. In reality, it adds, he is only waiting for the first German shot to be fired and hopes that the patrol activities of the United States may provoke it.
