“WELL DONE!”
WORK OF THE BOMBER COMMAND DESTRUCTION OF ENEMY SHIPPING. ACHIEVEMENTS PRAISED IN SPECIAL ORDER. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. June 7. A special Order of the Day which has been sent by the Air Officer Com-manding-in-Chief. Bomber Command, Air Marshal Sir Richard Peirse. to the air officer commanding the bomber group engaged in the daylight offensive against enemy shipping and coastal targets states: “On March 12 the squadrons under your command began their vigorous day offensive both against land targets and the shipping of the enemy from Norway to the Mediterranean. Since that day no fewer than 83 enemy ships have been destroyed and 13 severely damaged or disabled, while a further 54 have sustained some damage. Severe damage and casualties have also been inflicted on the enemy both in Germany and occupied territory. "The success of these attacks lies in the daring and resolution which have gone to their making. In the absence of cloud cover or fighter protection, the formidable defences of the enemy have been overborne by fine airmanship and high courage. I wish you to convey to all those who have contributed to the success of these operations, whether in the North Sea, Atlantic or Mediterranean, my warm congratulations on the magnitude of their achievement. To the captains and crews in particular I say, ’Well done.' ”
