The recently-formed New Zealand Spitfire squadron has gained its first blood, its squadron leader, a 24-year-old airman from Dannevirke, shooting down a Junkers 28 discovered attacking shipping. The squadron was at first disappointed because the Junkers was not seen io crash, and it could not be claimed as destroyed, but there was rejoicing in the mess next day when the Navy reported that the Junkers had crashed into the sea a few minutes after the combat. The squadron leader worked his passage to England to join the R.A.F. He was formerly an Air Flying instructor. His pupils included “Cobber" Kain.
