WITH HEAVIER ARMAMENT. BRITAIN'S LATEST FIGHTER PLANE. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 5. Interesting facts about Britain’s latest fighter aircraft, the Hawker Typhoon, reveal that it has more speed, greater firing power and heavier armament than any single-seater fighter yet designed. With a longer range than the Hurricane, or the Spitfire it is able to penetrate much further into the enemy country. Created by l\7r Sidney Camm, who gave Britain's Royal Air Force the Hurricane, Firry and Hart, the Typhoon is a compact, low-wing monoplane equipped with a Napier Sabre. 20 cylinder-type engine. The world's most powerful aeromotor. tlvj Sabre develops 2350 horse power ftf.- takeoff and 1800 horsepower at rated height, and gives a top speed of over 400 miles an hour with a very high rate of climb. This engine, which devr lops more power than the Royal Scr,t, the famous British locomotive, is e/.peeled to make aircraft history. The armament, according to tactical requirements, consists of multiple ma-chine-guns or shell-firing cannon. The Typhoon flew for the first time in February, 1940.
