ROAD TRAGEDY

MOTOR CYCLIST KILLED AFTER VISIT TO GREYTOWN. BODY FOUND IN CULVERT. The body of a motor-cyclist whose cycle had apparently run off a winding road in the Kaitoke district on Monday night was found by a Public Works employee at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The dead man was:— Eric Gordon Broughton, woollen worker, single, aged 26, of 58 Hutt Road. Petone. Mr Broughton had left his home in Petone, where he ; lived with his mother. at 1 o'clock on Monday afternoon. to visit friends in Greytown. He began his return journey at 6 o'clock the same day. The place of the accident was two miles south of the Summit, and as this is about 25 miles from Greytown, it is thought that the mishap would have taken place at about 7 o'clock on Monday evening. The motor-cycle and rider were thrown into a deep culvert at the side of the road, out of sight of passing motorists, and they were found by Mr William Evans, an employee of the Public Works Department at Kaitoke, whose duty it was to examine the culverts in the district each day. Identification was established by a drivers licence found in Mr Broughton’s clothing.
