WAIRARAPA V. HAWKE’S BAY A DRAWN GAME. FITZGERALD BEST BACK ON FIELD. ißy Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS. Juno 2. Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa drew 9 all in the first representative Rugby match of the season, played in Napier today. The game was fast and even. Though the Haxyke's Bay back line was showing clear superiority in the early stages, they later failed to keep form. Begley, Hawke’s Bay’s new first fiveeighth. should retain his position, but the best back on the field was Fitzgerald, the Wairarapa first five-eighth. There was nothing between the two forward packs, though Hawke’s Bay were superior in all the scrums. The Wairarapa forwards were a rangy, fast-breaking pack. For Wairarapa tries were scored by F. Fitzgerald, Mahupuku and J. A. Brown, none of which were converted. Hawke's Bay scored two tries ' and kicked a penalty goal. The return match between the teams will be played at Masterton on July 5.
BROUGH CUP RETAINED BY SOUTH TEAM. In splendid weather the North v South Wairarapa representative match for the Brough Cup was played on the Carterton Showgrounds before a fair attendance. The South team was fully represented except that Brough replaced Mason. The North team had five substitutes in its ranks. The game throughout was a hard one, several players being temporarily disabled. At half time no- score was registered by either side. In the second spell South scored 19 points and North 13. For the South Brunton scored a try and added the major points. He also kicked two penalty goals. A try by Martin Parker was converted by Brunton. Te Whaiti also scored a try. For North Hurley scored and converted his try. Joblin also crossed and converted his try and Mason scored an unconverted try. Mr W. Spooner was referee. Steve Morris in the Sou.th team and Joblin in the North were the outstanding players. In a curtain raiser between the Carterton and Masterion third grade teams Carterton won by ID points to 9. Mr 11. Johns was referee. IN OTHER CENTRES At Wanganui yesterday Taranaki beat Wanganui by 19 points to 15. Otago beat North Otago at Oamaru by 37 points to 15. Wellington were successful over Manawatu at Palmerston North by 18 points to 3. A Canterbury fifteen proved far too fast and enterprising for a South Island Universities team in a match at Lancaster Park, Christchurch. Canterbury won by the handsome margin of 24 points to 8. By lowering Wellington's colours. 17-10, in a rousing display of Rugby at Athletic Park, Wellington, yesterday, Athletic drew up to the position of co-leader in the Wellington Rugby Union’s senior first division championship.
