CARTERTON

BOY SCOUTS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ("Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Citizens' Committee of the Boy Scout movement was held last evening, Mr Morris presiding. There were also present Messrs C. E. White. A. Patterson. H. T. Ray, C. J. DeLacey and Miss F. Eagle. An ../apology for absence was received from wZ'Mrs Thompson. A vote of condolence was passed to the Scoutmaster, Mr Fairbrother, in the death of his mother-in-law. ' The treasurer reported a credit balance at the Post Office and the Bank of New Zealand. The matter of the sale of the right of way on the northern side of the Scout Den was considered and held over until the next meeting. It was reported that the donor of trees to provide timber for renovating the Boy Scout Den, Mr Jas. Callister, had cut the trees down and had them trimmed ready for removal to the mill for cutting. He was also providing two of his employees to assist in removing the trees. Mr Callister was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his generous offer. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Clif. Bond for his donation of a shield for the Wolf Cub pack. This shield is to go to the cub gaining the most marks for good behaviour, etc. It was resolved that two dozen tenderfoot badges be purchased for the scouts and cubs and that proficiency certificates be procured. The date of the annual meeting of citizens was fixed for Monday. July 14. at the "Times-Age”'Office.

DRUIDS’ LODGE OFFICERS INSTALLED. The installation meeting of Totara Lodge No. 3, U.A.0.D., was held last night at which visitors from Stonehenge Lodge No. 1, of Masterton, were present. Grand Lodge forwarded contributions for the Alaj* quarter for five members on active service overseas. Jjivitations to attend the meeting of Fernleaf Lodge, Greytown, on Thursday next, and the Stonehenge Lodge on Monday next were accepted. D.P. Bro. A. J. Dew, assisted by P.D.P. Bro. H. Matson as M.C., install* ed the newly-elected officers after which the officers returned thanks for election. In the list of missing soldiers in Greece are sons of Totara Lodge members, and it was resolved that the families be written to expressing the hope that good news would soon be received and that the names would be removed from the list of missing. P.A. Bro. W. Fryer was presented with a Past Arch collar and diploma in recognition of services rendered by him to the lodge. Bro. Fryer suitably acknowledged the gift. The Arch Druid reported that the annual ball had been both a social and financial success, for which the ladies’ committee was largely responsible. Lodge members combined well in every way and the result was satisfactory. The total receipts to date were £55 18s lOld, expenses £lB Ils 9d, leaving a credit of £37 7s IJd. There were still further donations to come in. Sick pay and accounts amoufiting to £24 14s 3d were passed for payment. At the conclusion of business the visitors were entertained at supper.

LADIES’ GOLF MEDAL ROUND RESULTS. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Carterton School Committee last evening. Those present were Messrs H. M. McKenzie (chairman), B. E. Clark, C. K. Goodin. G. Stark. P. Beere. W. Knowles and the headmaster, Mr Martin. Il was reported that Miss Fisher had been transferred and Miss Rolls had been appointed to the staff. Il was announced that the general account was in credit £lB 2s 5d and 'the special account £ll ss. Accounts amounting to £9 4s 3d wore passed for payment. Mi- Beere reported that the Automobile Association film "Safety First" had arrived in the Wairarapa and would be screened at the various schools as soon as arrangements could be made. The chairman reported in connection with the recent meeting of the dental j clinic. The next meeting of the committee will be held on Monday, June 7. al 8 o'clock, so as to enable the members i>[ the executive of the dental clinic to hold their meeting first. Mr G. Stark, who has had to enter hospital for treatment, was granted leave from the next meeting. Alarm of Fire. At 7.45 o'clock last evening an alarm of fire was sounded as the result of a blazing chimney in the business area of the town.

Personal. The many friends of Mr L. Rogers will bo pleased to learn that he has recovered sufficiently to be able to leave the Masterton Hospital where he had been an inmate for twelve weeks. On Thursday evening at Clareville Pies. O. Daysh and McKenzie will be entertained by the residents of Clareville. Carrington and West Taratahi. Social Gathering at Dalefield. There was a good attendance at the Dalefield Hall last evening when Private A. L. Cigwood was the guest of honour. Music for the dancing was' provided by Mrs Rogers and Mr R. Knowles. During Ute evening Mr Bassett referred to the high esteem in which Private Bigwood was held and on behalf of the residents of Matarawa and Dalefield he presented Private Bigwood with tt wristlet watch. Musical honours were accorded Private Bigwood who suitably replied. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss N. Conwell and Mr 11. Bain. The duties of M.C. wore capably carried mil by Mr W. Press.
