GREYTOWN

HOME GUARD SOUTH WAIRARAPA BATTALION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The formation of the Home Guard units in the South Wairarapa into a battalion is nearly complete and the commander has divided the district as follows:—The Headquarters Company at Grey town will have Signals, Ambulance, Transport and Supply, MotorCyclists, Mounted Rifles and Engineersections. A company will also have its headquarters at Greytown and will include Morison’s Bush. B Company will have its headquarters at Carterton and will include specialist sections of Transport and Engineers, and Ambulance. C Company, with headquarters at Featherston, will include the Kahutara unit, and this company will also have its own specialist sections. D Company headquarters will be at Martinborough and will include the Pirinoa unit, having its own specialists. This Battalion, which has a roll of nearly 800, includes a large number of veterans from the last war and everything possible is being done to make it efficient. The specialist sections have in their ranks men who are used to handling modern machinery, and the training will be based on utilising this to the full. The Motor Cycle and Mounted Rifle units have each a strength of thirty and new recruits are coming each week. The Intelligence Officer has already collected large scale maps of the district, and the resources of the district are being tabulated. The mobility of the battalion is being carefully planned. The whole battalion will be assembled in the Lower Valley at an early date. WORKING MEN’S CLUB MEMBERS ENTERTAINED. A pleasant function was held at the South Wairarapa Working Men’s Club on Saturday afternoon when four esteemed members were the guests of honour. They were Messrs W. H. Ray. E. H. Trotman, E. Playle, B. Burch and J. Parker. Mr F. V. Kempton, a past president, proposed the toast of the guests and in doing so complimented them on their long years of membership. He stated that Mr B. Burch, who was 86 years of age. was a foundation member of the club. Mr Kempton also said that the average age of their guests was 81 years. Afternoon tea was served and presentations of smoking requisites were made to the four members, each of whom expressed his delight at being present and returned thanks for the honour extended to them. Mi- E. H. .Trotman has the distinction of being the head of a family with three generations who arc members of the club. His son. Mr H. C. Trotman, is a member of the committee, and two grandsons arc also members, one being on active service. In the early evening a community sing was held, and five soldier members on leave were the guests of honour. The president (Mr W. Grigg) presented Messrs T. Anker, H. Hooper, D. Fenwick, E. L. Morgan and T. Reid With a money belt each,-and, on behalf of the members, wished them every good fortune. The club orchestra (Messrs D. Te Tau. D. Sutherland. G. Te Whaiti and C. Morris) rendered several items, and Mr W. Andrews was song leader. The popular secretary Mr A. H. Humphhey, is to be congratulated on the excellent arrangements made. In the evening a euchre party was held.

Bulpin, of Wellington, is the guest of the Rev. and Mrs G. Knowles Smith, Main Street. Corporal and Mrs Horsfall, of Wellington, are the guests of Mr and Mrs J, Rees, McMaster Street. Mr W. A. Perry, of Wellington, is .a visitor to Greytown. Mrs Duff, Senr.. who has been visiting Palmerston North, returned home 1 yesterday. Mr E. Thomas. Island Bay, has been on a visit to his mother, Mrs R. Thomas, Moroa. Mr L. Brabender was in Greytown for the weekend. Mrs J. Bowman and Miss C. Gray. Wellington, were visiting their parents. Mr and Mrs H. Gray, at the weekend. Miss D. Richards, McMaster Street has returned home from a holiday spent in Napier. Miss Dulcie Rees. Wellington, has been visiting her parents. Mr and Mrs I. Rees. McMaster Street. Corporal A. Anker, of the Trentham camp, is at present on leave, and is staying with his parents. Mr and Mrs R Anker. West Street.
