The first cargo of food sent to Britain under the machinery of the American Lease and Lend Act has arrived in a British ship at a British port. The Minister of Food, Lord Woolton, accompanied by Mr Averell Herriman, President Roosevelt’s co-ordinator of activities under the Lease and Lend Act, visited the ship and inspected the cargo. To Mr Harriman, Lord Woolton said: “We are very grateful to your country for this food. It will help our people, our miners and dock labourers to keep up the magnificent struggle they are making.” Mr Harriman replied: “We appreciate how important it is that you should have this food, which is as necessary as guns and petrol. The American people arc ready to help the British people in any way they can.” The shipload included 120,000 pounds of cheese, 4,000,000 eggs, and 1000 tons of flour. Cases of machine tools recently arrived from the United States of' America contained parcels of evaporated milk for distribution where needed. The milk was sent for children in a heavily-raided area.
