RAID ON DUBLIN

LARGE NUMBERS KILLED OR INJURED WIDESPREAD DAMAGE DONE TO PROPERTY. PROPAGANDA DENIAL IN BERLIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, May 31. Dublin, hist night suffered mi air raid comparable with some of the raids on frontline British towns, Between 30 and 40 persons were killed and more than 100 were injured. There was widespread damage to property.

The raid began shortly after 1 a.in. Planes droned over the city for a considerable time. Bombs on the north side demolished a dozen houses. Many were buried in the wreckage. Others demolished at least 20 buildings in North Strand. The Summerhill'district suffered severely. A bomb 'fell in Phoenix Park, blowing out the windows of the President’s residence. Streams of injured people and bomb- | ed-out families were carried from the vast affected areas. Fires were brought under control by 5 a.m. While the raid was at its height the Dublin fire brigade received an oiler of assistance from the Belfast fire brigade, reciprocating Eire’s previous gesture to Ulster. However, Dublin replied that assistance was not required, though it expressed grateful thanks. The anti-aircraft defences went into action before the bombing began. A British Official Wireless message says that the aircraft that did the bombing are believed to have been identified as German. The Berlin correspondent of the British United Press says that officials declared there was no confirmation of reports that Dublin had been bombed. "We can only recall our statement when this occurred before, that it was an attempt by Mi- Churchill to create a new Athenia case. When the British bomb Irish territory, we can see with what intent.”
