ANGER IN JAPAN
DEMANDS ON NETHERLANDS INDIES TALK OF “ADEQUATE STEPS.” APPROACH TO BRITAIN DENIED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) TOKIO, May 30. The “Michi Nichi Shimbun” and “Ycmiuri Shimbun,” in vehement editorials, reiterated the purely economic nature of the Japanese proposals to the Netherlands East Indies, and angrily warned that “adequate steps” may have to be taken by Japan in the event of the conversations collapsing. The Nichi Nichi emphasised that Japan’s southward policy would not be affected in the least either by the international position of Japan or whatever altitude the East Indies authorities may decide to adopt. The official spokesman denied that the Japanese sought British good offices in the deadlock although admitting it was possible the British had been requested to place no obstacle in Japan's way. The British Ambassador (Sir Robert Craigie’s) meeting yesterday with the Foreign Vice-Minister is said to have been concerned with economic matters between Britain and Japan only. The Asahi Shimbun said the Foreign Office regards the application of export control to the Philippines as part of the United States' economic pressure on the Axis Powers and added that Japanese counter measures depend on the nature of the actual enforcement.
