WAIRARAPA COLLEGE
BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEET PHYSICAL CULTURE INSTRUCTION VACANCY TO BE FILLED. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors was held in the new board room at the College last night. The chairman, Mr W. R. Nicol, presided. There were also present: Mrs J. L. Hair, Messrs A. Owen Jones, L. T. Daniell, F. C. Daniell, F. M. Whyte, G. C. L. Dickel, J. D. O'Connor, T. Hanley and the Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox. Mr Hancox reported that Miss R. K. Edwards, physical culture mistress, had resigned her position owing to the death of her father, and was released from duty at her request at the end of last term. Miss Edwards had been on the staff for over three years and had done particularly good work on the physical culture side. In the meantime Miss M. McLaren was taking the girls' physical work. Mr Owen Jones asked for information concerning the appointment of a qualified teacher. “I would be sorry to see physical education go back. It is so important,” said Mr Hanley. Mr Hancox stated that there was not sufficient work to keep a full time instructor. She would be required to teach as well. Miss Edwards had stated that Miss McLaren was- the most suitable person to fill a temporary position. “The standard has been very high and we should not let it go back,” said Mr Nicol. Mr G. C. L. Dickel: “That is what the Principal is watching.” Mr Nicol stated that he would like to see a full time instructress, provided she had the necessary qualifications. “The education committee should handle new appointments or else it should be wiped out,” said Mr Jones. After further discussion it was decided to endorse the Principal's action and to call for applications for the position. Mr Jones, chairman of the finance committee stated that expenditure for the year totalled £3,117 and receipts £2,760. With the £2lO grant made by the Department of Education towards the College garage there would be a deficiency of £147. Mr Jones urged the establishment of a building depreciation fund. The only item which called for comment was the cost of heating the College hostel. Over £5 a week was too much. He suggested that the usefulness of the plant should be investigated. “On the whole we have come out very ■well,” commented Mr Nicol. The Principal’s report stated that the evening school resumed on May 26 and the day school on May 27, after a fortnight’s' vacation. Approval was sought for the appointment of Miss E. McFarlane as a typewriting teacher in the evening school]. On May 8 the West School vacated the rooms occupied by them for 2 years. Mr Hancox also reported on the results of the Technological examinations held last November. The contractors had been carrying out improvements and repairs during the holidays. The Department had approved of a grant for repairs to the sealed areas around the school. The secondary and technical inspectors were visiting the College. Committees were elected as follows: Educational, Mr Nicol (chairman), Mrs J. L. Hair, Mr G. C. L. Dickel. Finance, Messrs Owen Jones (chairman), F. M. Whyte, T. Hanley. Works, Messrs F. C. Daniell ((chairman), L. T. Daniell, J. D. O’Connor.
Messrs Jones and Daneill were accorded a vote of thanks for their services.
