GREYTOWN
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) presided and Councillors W. A. Tate, I. Blissett, A. Stuart, E. Balfour, G. F. Eagar, H. J. Farley, H. C. Trotman and H. McKenna were also present. An apology for absence was received from Councillor F. Wood. The Mayor expressed his pleasure at seeing the old councillors back at the table. He also welcomed the new councillor, Mr H. McKenna. Councillor W. A. Tate was re-elected Deputy Mayor. Committees were appointed as follows: —Finance, the whole council; works, Crs. Farley, Trotman, Tate, Wood, McKenna; gas, the Mayor, Crs. Stuart, Tate, Wood; cemetery, Crs. Farley, Stuart, Trotman, Blissett; Town Hall buildings, the Mayor, Crs Blissett, Eagar, Stuart; library, Crs. Balfour, Eagar, McKenna. Before the minutes of the last meeting were confirmed Councillor Farley again raised the question of telephone communication between the Woodside Railway Station and Grey town. He stated that only last week a lady had arrived at Woodside by the last rail car (being unable to return by the early car) and she had to walk to Greytown. The Mayor stated that the Post Office authorities would not do anything in the matter at present, but suggested that the Railway Department be asked to assist. The Poundkeeper reported that no stock had been impounded during the month. The Government Housing Department wrote stating that arrangements were being made to clear their sections of noxious weeds and broom. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote accepting the council’s offer to make a flat rate of £6O per annum for a high pressure water supply instead of by meter charge. The Town Lands Trust wrote agreeing to the Memorial Park playing area being grazed with sheep. Councillor Farley stated that Messrs Garrity Bros, would cut the grass in the course of a few days. The National Man- Power Council wrote stating that capitation for the local Home Guard unit would be paid through the Local Authority. The secretary of the Wairarapa Hospital Board forwarded the estimates for 1941/42. The Borough contribution would be £26 4s, less this year, a reduction of 10 per cent. A letter was received from the Lake County Council, Queenstown, requesting support for a resolution asking the Government to bring about the immediate cessation of the 40 hour week, together with its hampering regulations. The Council agreed to support the proposal for the duration of the war. The Building Committee was authorised to procure the necessary chairs to furnish the Committee Room. Councillor McKenna asked what the E.P.S. in Greytown had done. The Mayor stated that various committees had been formed, and that the secretary of the Hospital Board would come to Greytown shortly to organise the E.P.S. The Council decided to meet at 7.30 o’clock during the winter months. Personal. Mrs R. Pickard has returned to Greytown, from a holiday visit to Hawke’s Bay. Golf. ; The results of the first round of the Ladies’ Challenge Cup competition played on the Greytown links on Saturday arc as follow: —Miss E. Gregor. 90-18-72. 21- points; Mrs Gold. 90-18-72. 21 points; Mrs Jury, 92-18-74, 1 point. Knitters Urgently Needed. Knitters are urgently needed who will knit mittens, balaclavas or scarves. The Mayoress has an ample supply of Khaki wool on hand, and appeals to all to help in the knitting. Those willing to assist are asked to communicate with Mrs Horton.
