HIT BY TORPEDO ON MONDAY NIGHT

An Admiralty communique issued on Monday night states: “The chase of the Bismarck in the Atlantic has been hotly pursued. This evening torpedo bombers of the Fleet Air Arm have a scored a hit with a torpedo on the Bismarck. The hunt continues.’’ Oslo Radio Report BATTLE IN DENMARK STRAIT (Received This Dav, 12.55 n.m.) LONDON, May 26. The Oslo radio states that a German squadron, including the battleship Bismarck, is now fighting a superior British squadron in Denmark Strait, between Iceland and Greenland. PURSUIT PROSPECTS Considered Exceptionally Good PLYMOUTH AND PORTSMOUTH IN MOURNING FOR MEN OF HOOD ('Received This Dav, 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, May 2G. Some of Britain’s most powerful warships are believed to be pursuing, in the North Atlantic, the German squadron which sank H.M.S. Hood. “ Our chances of engaging the enemy are considered to be exceptionally good,” says the “Daily Express” naval correspondent. “There is almost continuous daylight in the North Atlantic now.” As was feared, few if any of the Hood’s complement have survived. Two, towns in England are in mourning. What is variously called a heavy calamity and a painful blow has brought more tragedy among the homes of blitzed Plymouth and Portsmouth.
