COURSING
NORTHERN ST. LEGER STAKES SATURDAY'S EVENTS AT AKURA PLUMPTON. BACK LOOP SLAM SUCCESSFUL. There was a large attendance at the Akura Plumpton on Saturday when the Wairarapa Coursing Club held the Northern St. Leger and Open Stake events, under the auspices of the North Island Greyhound Racing Association. The weather was ideal and coursing was seen at its best. A feature of the meeting was the fact that of 21 courses every hare reached the escapes well ahead of the dogs. It is stated that it was the first time for 12 yedrs that a meeting has been conducted without a ••kill.” The patron, Mr J. H. Payton. at the conclusion of the events presented the St. Leger ribbon to the winner, Mrs W. Williams, Masterton. Mr Payton congratulated her on the fine performance registered by her entry and on the fact that she was a loyal supporter of the club.
Entries were received from all parts of the Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay and Auckland provinces. The policy of the club in giving the hares a thorough training, has been amply rewarded and augurs well for the big three-day championship meeting to be run on July 3, 4 and 5. The principal event, the St. Leger, saw Mrs W. Williams's Back Loop Siam, narrowly defeat W. L. Jensen's Tarangimutu in the final course. A noticeable feature of the final was that Tarangimutu was runner-up in the Puppy Stake last month to Wind Up, a full brother to the St. Leger winner, i thereby stamping Great Worry as probably the most outstanding sire in the North Island today. The Open Stake winner, Lady Luna, proved to be a consistent performer as she was successful at the opening meeting of the season. On a long run up to the hare she was just able to score over her opponent, White Lie to emerge the winner, IJ--0. Results are: —
