WAIRARAPA UNION SATURDAY’S RESULTS. { IMPROVEMENT IN PLAY. The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s championship competitions were continued in ideal weather on Saturday afternoon. An interesting feature of the senior competition was the defeat of Gladstone at the hands of Greytown, and the newly-formed Featherston team's convincing win over Red Star. Carterton, who remain unbeaten, overran Masterton in a bright game at Memorial Park. The standard of play is showing a marked improvement and in all games on Saturday the fast, open play which draws football followers was in evidence. RESULTS AT A GLANCE Senior. Carterton 14. Masterton 6. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP CARTERTON v MASTERTON. BRIGHT AND OPEN PLAY AT MEMORIAL PARK. Carterton were too fast and fit for Masterton at Memorial ’Park on Saturday and won by 34 points to 9 in a bright, open game. Although the Maroons over-ran the local team, patrons were treated to entertaining Rugby. Play in the first half was particularly open but in the second spell Carterton eased the pressure. Carterton scored lime after time through brilliant co-ordination in the back line. All the backs showed remarkable pace and raced throughi Masterton’s defence. The Masterton forwards worked hard and made many attacks on Carterton territory but their opponents' defence was too strong. Masterton’s points came from a penalty goal kicked by H. Ewington, while V. Gray outran the Carterton fullback following a speculative kick to score a good try. Owing to a breach of the rules, in placing the ball, the referee disallowed an attempt to convert the try. Munro, a forward, also crossed Carterton's goal line for an unconverted try.
For Carterton, George Brown scored three tries, J. A. Brown two tries, and Bush, Tilyard and Desmond scored one each. F. Fitzgerald converted two tries and J. Brown was in good form to convert three tries. Mr W. Grantham capably handled the game. GLADSTONE BEATEN. SURPRISE WIN FOR GREYTOWN. Greytown registered a surprise win over Gladstone in a hard game at Greytown. Neither side crossed the goal-line, a penalty goal giving Greytown the victory. Both packs adopted spoiling tactics and broke away very fast. Greytown secured the ball from the scrum almost ' throughout the match. Gladstone s back line failed to function, and as a result play was confined to the forwards. The game produced many bright forward rushes.
Greytown won the match when Martin Parker kicked a penalty goal from a difficult position. Mr B. M. Hurley was referee.
FEATHERSTON BEAT RED STAR,
HOME TEAM'S EASY WIN.
i Featherston scored a well-deserved . win over Rod Star by 35 points to 3 at Featherston. Featherston's back line showed .excellent combination and made few mistakes. Red Star put up a game resistance. It is anticipated that Featherston will make the competition ah interesting one, Featherston's points came from trios scored by Chapman (3), Cross (1), Morris (3), Mahupuka (1). and Jensen (1). Mahupuka converted three tries and Jensen one. For Red Star T. Harris scored an unconverted try. REPRESENTATIVE MATCH WAIRARAPA v HAWKE’S BAY. LOCAL TEAM SELECTED. Players are requested to attend practice on the Carterton Showgrounds on Wednesday evening at 7.30 o'clock.
