FEATHERSTON

RIVER BOARD MEETING ON SATURDAY. ("Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the South Wairarapa River Board was held in the Council Chambers on Saturday. Those present were Messrs R. A. Donald, R. W. Matthews, A. Linton, W. H. Martin, W. T. Hume and G. R. Colman. An apology for absence was received from Mr T. A. Herrick. Mr R. A. Donald was unopposed reelected chairman. The credit balance at the Eank of New Zealand was reported at £472 17s 2d, and accounts passed for payment amounted to £l2 3s. A balance-sheet" was presented and accepted, subject to audit. It was resolved to add a 10 per cent penalty to all unpaid rates after June 11. 1941. A deputation from the Kahutara 'Rived Board, consisting of the chairman, Mr E. C. Holmes, and the engineer, Mr H. F. Toogood, waited on the board to discuss the proposed cut through the place known as the “Hairpin Bend” of the Ruamahanga River. Plans were shown by the engineer, and after a deal of discussion it was decided to hold the matter over until the members of this Board had viewed the land and thought over the matter. The draft proposal concerning river erosion was explained to the Board by Mr H. F. Toogood. It was decided that the chairman, Mr R. A. Donald, and Mr H. F. Toogood, M. Inst. C.E., be appointed to give evidence before the river-control committee. It was resolved to call tenders for the clearing of the bed of the Turanganui River as shown on plans supplied. The engineer was authorised to prepare plans and estimates regarding the alteration of stop-banks on the west side of Lake Wairarapa.

C Golf. The following were the best cards handed in for the second round of the medal competition, played on Saturday . afternoon: —-H. Nielson, 90-22-88; I. Donald, 90-19-71; H. R. Bloxam, 86-13-73; A. , Hoby, 90-15-75; L. G. Benton, 91-16-75. 5 Personal Items. Mrs M. Brady, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs Ned' Perry, of the Empire 1 Hotel. 1 Mr C. J. Carlyon, who is attached to the clerical staff at the Rongotai Aerodrome, was home for the week-end. Miss Barbara Sharp, who spent the 1 school vacation with her parents. Dr. and Mrs G. S. Sharp, has returned to Wellington to continue her studies at 1 Victoria University. ■ Mrs Stanley Raper and her daughter ' Dorothy have returned from a .short holiday spent in Wellington. ! Owing to Miss I. Collier not being ■ able to take up her duties at the local ; school at present, Miss Joyce Hatton will act as relieving infant mistress un- . til Collier arrives. Swimming Club Dance. The Swimming Club held another of its popular dances in the Officers’ room of the Anzac Hall on Saturday night. There was a good attendance, and proceedings went with a swing. Messrs Alex. Burt and A. McNamara acted as M.C.’s, and Mrs H. J. Moran supplied the music, extras being played by Misses K. Saba and G. Fraser. During the evening the Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr A. McNamara and Miss K. Saba. The committee, which is comprised of young people, are to be congratulated upon the manor in which these dances are conducted. As a result of their efforts the club is in quite a sound position financially. Hockey. The local team journeyed to Martinborough on Saturday, where they were

successful in defeating the Martinborough team by 3 goals to 2. The teams were very evenly matched, and a fast and exciting game was witnessed. The. goals for Featherston were all scored by Mrs Staples. The game was controlled by Messrs C. Skill and P. Habib. Nev,/ Councillors to be Sworn In. The following new councillors will be sworn in at the next meeting of the Borough Council: —Messrs W. J. Boston, R. R. P. Hardy. G. Farrier and S. Batchelor. Miniature Rifle Club. The Featherston Miniature Rifle Club' is to be congratulated upon its foresight in purchasing sufficient supplies of ammunition to enable the club to carry operations on for the current season. It is understood that a number of clubs in the Wairarapa have had to go into recess on account of the shortage of ammunition. Possibly membership, too, has suffered somewhat as a result of men joining the military forces.
