WAR WEAPONS WEEK
MAGNIFICENT RESPONSE IN LONDON. OBJECTIVE MUCH EXCEEDED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 24. At the close of banking hours at noon on. Saturday London's War Weapons figure stood at £108.732.000. No further figures will be issued till the final result is disclosed by Lord Kindersley, president of the National Savings Committee, when he broadcasts on Monday evening. Raising money during the campaign for buying fighters at the rate of three per minute, the city is deservedly proud of the success of War Weapons Week.
The subscriptions are a fitting symbol of the unimpaired strength of the financial capital of the Empire. All sections of the community have done their bit. but no one denies that the banks have played a part of outstanding importance in swelling the total. This has given financial commentators ground for the complaint that the appeal would more genuinely represent public self-denial if the bank subscriptions were excluded. They suggest that the Dominions should note this if they lake up the same idea of raising funds.
