BUDDY BAER
FAILURE AGAINST LOUIS. HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE BOUT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON. May 24. Joe Louis retained his world heavyweight title in a •match with Buddy Baer, who was unable 10 answer the bell ai the start of the seventh round. Louis was knocked through the ropes in the first round, but lie was back at the count of four, and thereafter he completely outclassed the challenger. Baer was sent to.the canvas twice in the sixth, round, and lie had just risen as the referee was reaching the count of 10. when the bell rang. Louis, who apparently did not hear the bell, due to the roar of a crowd of 40.000, landed a terrific right which knocked Baer unconscious. Referee Donovan said the last blow was landed before the bell, but most observers differ. When Baer was unable to answer the bell the referee disqualified him.
