WEST SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE PLANS FOR BEAUTIFYING GROUNDS., OPENING OF NEW BUILDING LATER. The chairman, Mr E. R. Rogers, presided over the monthly meeting of the Masterton West School Committee. There were also present: Messrs W. Campbell, W. G. Baird, R. Graham, S. Haybittie, W. Batty, E. Tooby and the headmaster, Mr J. P. Farrell. Mr Farrell reported that the pupils had moved to the new open-air school in Cole Street a day or so before the May vacation in order that they would be settled down before the new term commenced. The headmaster and members of the committee had inspected the new school and were very impressed with its modern facilities. Plans were discussed for beautifying the grounds and improving the playing areas.

It was reported that the school swimming baths were extensively used during the summer and were in good order. The new school would be officially opened when the concreting and asphalting work had been completed. It was decided to approach the Beautifying Society to have flowering trees planted on Cole Street from .Pownall Street to the school gates. The attendance at the school had been good, despite outbreaks of mumps. The bluegum trees facing Cole Street had been topped and the trees at the side of the school will be done shortly. The headmaster stated he would be in attendance at the school to enrol new pupils on Monday. Members of the committee expressed their appreciation of the work being done in Masterton by the Trust Lands Trust. New sports gear purchases were authorised by the committee. The playing areas at the new West School were reported to be in good order for football, and the thanks of the committee were due to Mr J. Renner for his assistance.,
