(“Times-Age” Special.) } The annua] report of the Eketahuna j Returned Soldiers’ Association for the past year states, inter alia: The financial membership of the association as at March 31, 1941, was 73. as against 71 last year. The association's finances were in a healthy condition. Relief funds were held in two separate funds, the .Poppy Day Fund and Canteen Funds. These funds had again increased during the year. It had been the policy of the executive to husband these resources in oTder to meet the problems which undoubtedly would arise in the near future. Thanks were due to the public for the generous manner in which it continues to support the Poppy Day appeal. It was the association’s policy to give firm support to the Home Guard and the E.P.S. A unit of both of these organisations had been formed in this district, and the vice-president', Mr A.
B. Fordyce, had been appointed battalion commander. It was safe to say that the majority of the members belonged to either one or the other of these organisations. The social side of the association’s activities had not been neglected, and in addition to the annual reunion two reunions were held during the year. These all proved very enjoyable functions and a special feature was the entertaining of soldiers of the district. The committee placed on record its appreciation of those who had assisted the work of the association during the year. To the ladies who undertook the sale of Poppies, and to the public for the response to the appeal the association's thanks were extended. The association was also indebted to the ladies of the Eketahuna branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union for the hospitality extended to its members and their wives and children after the parade on Anzac Day. The conductor and members of the Eketahuna Orchestra were thanked for the music supplied at the Anzac Day memorial service and parade, and the Press for publicity freely given to the association’s affairs. The committee appealed to members for their full support of the incoming executive, and asked them to back up the .executive’s efforts in the direction of maintaining the association and assisting the objects for which it stood. South Wairarapa. It is understood that the number of calls switched through per day average over 20 which naturally keeps the staff somewhat busy as a consequence. When Carterton. Greytown or Martinborough desire numbers outside their district, these numbers are switched through the local office. Tb.e staff is exceedingly courteous, obliging and efficient. Perhaps when subscribers realise how busy the staff is. they will be more tolerant, if they are not answered immediately they ring. ~
