FEATHERSTON

DANCE REVIEW IN AID OF RED CROSS SOCIETY. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a packed house nt the Town Hall last night to witness the 1941 Dance Review, produced by Miss Billie Stevens, of Petone, and her talented pupils, in aid of the local Red Cross Society funds. The programme was, of a very high standard, and those keen on fancy and tap dancing were given a treat. It must be many years since the public of Featherston has had the pleasure of witnessing such talent, and it can be said that, the programme was even of a higher standard than last year s performance, when Miss Stevens charmed her audience with her clever ballets and sketches. The costumes were very striking, giving grace and tone. Space will not permit the describing of each item in detail, but the rendering of “Snow White,” “Pinnochio” and “The Peacock” were worthy of special mention. The ballets were most spectacular and rendered with grace, poise and rhythm. Some of the performers were little tots, who displayed outstanding skill.

At the interval, Mr J. E. Willett introduced Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford, patroness of the Red Cross Society, who delivered a short but inspiring address, outlining the origin and work of the Red Cross Society. Mrs Riddiford specially urged the public to join the classes and so help to make themselves efficient in this great work. She then presented Miss Stevens with a beautiful shoulder spray, and on behalf of the society thanked Miss Stevens and her pupils for the splendid programme. Mrs Riddiford also tendered thanks to Mr J. E. Willett, organiser of the concert. Four V.A.D’s. then held the flag for “stray” coins, which were showered from all directions. Opportunity was given those at the rear of the hall and upstairs, who were too far away from the stage, to deposit their surplus coins in the flag as they left the hall. The second half of the programme was equally as enjoyable as the first, and the singing of the National Anthem brought a much enjoyed programme to a close.

CHURCH NEV/ MINISTER WELCOMED. A very pleasant' time was spent by members of the Featherston Methodist Church and their friends at a welcome social gathering in the Odd Fellows’ Hall on Wednesday evening. Representatives of the Anglican and Presbyterian churches were present, with a good Attendance of Methodists to welcome the new Methodist minister. the Rev L. A. D. Hayman. The arrangements were in the hands of Mr F. Clarke, who, after the gathering had been opened with a hymn and prayer, conducted a varied programme of games, competitions and singing. Before refreshments were served, Mr Clarke, in a short speech of welcome, introduced Mr Hayman and the Rev J. Higgs, afterwards calling on Mr Higgs to address the gathering. Mr Higgs, in a happy speech, declared his pleasure at being present, and said that he hoped to see a fuller co-operation between the churches during the period of his stay in Featherston. This sentiment was heartily reciprocated. , Mr Hayman, in replying, thanked those present for their kindly reception and especially Mr Higgs for his warm words of welcome. The gathering closed with community singing and the pronouncing of the Benediction. Swimming Club Dance.
