A meeting of the Ilnanpe committee of the Masterton County Council was held today. The chairman, Mr 11. 11. Mawley. presided. The returning officer, Mr J. C. D. Mackley. reported on the results of ttie triennial election.

The treasurer reported on the state of the several county accounts as follows:—County fund account, credit, £64 7s 8d; bridge account, credit, £536 7s Id. Receipts since last meeting totalled £733 0s sd. Claims due by the Main Highways Board totalled £595 Is 7d. Accounts for £3.241 3s 4d were recommended for payment. The secretary of the New Zealand County Councils’ Industrial Union of Employees advised that the Labourers’ Union had filed an application for a new award to replace that made by the Court of Arbitration on May 30. 1940. The citation claimed further restriction in the hours of work, and an increase in wages as well as the alteration of certain conditions. The council was asked to comment on the claim.

The council raised a strong protest against further restrictions in the hours of work and any increase in wages, which it was considered would only lead to increased costs which the council would have to pass on to the ratepayers.
