The secretary of the New Zealand County Councils’ Industrial Union of Employees advised that the Labourers’ Union had filed an application for a new award to replace that made by the Court of Arbitration on May 30. 1940. The citation claimed further restriction in the hours of work, and an increase in wages as well as the alteration of certain conditions. The council was asked to comment on the claim.
The council raised a strong protest against further restrictions in the hours of work and any increase in wages, which it was considered would only lead to increased costs which the council would have to pass on to the ratepayers.
