P. AND A. SOCIETY

GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING AT CARTERTON TODAY. EASTERN COUNCIL PROBLEM. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society was held at Carterton today. The president, Mr J. A. McLeod, presided, with whom was associated Messrs O. A. Cadwallader and V ,L. Robinson (vice-presidents). There was a good attendance. Prior to the commencement of business the president referred to the deaths of Mrs R. F. R. Beetham and Mr F. A. Ellis, a show supporter. It was decided to send letters of sympathy to the relatives. The treasurer, Mr Geo. Brown, reported that there was a total credit balance of £928 4s. There was a credit of £434 2s 4d at the Bank of New Zealand and £494 18s at the Post Office Savings Bank. Receipts since last meeting totalled £9l. Accounts for £65 14s 7d were passed. Mr Smart (secretary) reported that subscriptions were coming in remarkably well. Arising out of a letter sent to the Masterton A. and P. Association, in the Masterton A. and P. Association concerning the Eastern District Show Council, Mr Smart reported that he had met Mr R. H. Williams, Secretary of the Masterton A. and P. Association in the matter. Mr Williams had; stated that the Masterton Committee held the same opinion of the council as the Wairarapa P. and A. Society. It was suggested that the Eastern and Western show councils be amalgamated. “As far as we are concerned ».he Eastern. Show Council, is defunct. Amalgamation is desirable," said Mr McLeod. "We will then get people who will take an interest in show affairs.”

It was decided to forward a remit to the Royal Show Council suggesting that the Eastern and Western District councils be amalgamated. Messrs A. Clarke. C. L. Reynolds. C. J. Nix and J. A. McLeod were appointed a committee to confer with the Masterton Association in the matter. It was decided that the Wairarapa Rugby Union be charged £lO as rent for the showgrounds for the ensuing year.

Mr K. G. Fairbrother gave a report on the Union's finances. He pointed out that at one time the gate money on a club match was £lOO. Last year the total gate receipts for the season were just over that sum. He pointed out that the union was not in a position to pay a large sum for rent. He appreciated the society's assistance.

The Royal Show Society advised that the annual meeting would be held in Wellington on June 27. A new member was elected and several resignations were received. Two additional members who are serving overseas were regarded as financial members for the duration of the war. The caretaker reported on maintenance work which had been carried out at the showgrounds. It was decided to hold the next meeting a week earlier than usual. Show committees and stewards were appointed.
